Water Saving with a Spa

How much water does a spa really consume?

The average spa will hold about 1200 to 1600 litres of water and it is recommended that you change the water about three times a year. You may either completely change the water three times a year or you may reduce the water by about a third each month and top it up.

The reason it is necessary to change the water is that over time the total dissolved solids builds up to the point where further addition of chemicals will not maintain good healthy water balance. These dissolved solids come from bathers and residual from the water treatment.

Since a Spa is normally covered loss due to evaporation is far less than a pool. Now the amount of water used in real terms is less than 100 litres per week so it is not a lot in real terms. However with the water crisis facing Australia what are the solutions for responsible Spa owners?

The water drained from you spa will be fine to use on your gardens, just do not add chemicals for a few days prior to draining and the water will be fine on most plants that are not super sensitive. This will ensure you are not wasting this valuable resource.

One easy solution is a down pipe diverter fitted to your down pipe. You will find that even a short shower will yield enough water to fill or top up your Spa. If you have water tank installed then you will have water at your disposal all the time without using the Scheme water.
